ELLE – since 1945 & forever

75 years of fashion, beauty, lifestyle and above all: empowerment of women

This year, world-famous ELLE magazine celebrates its 75th anniversary. That’s the perfect occasion for us to bring you a deeper insight into the history and values of ELLE, our cherished license partner since 1996.

When a woman follows her calling

In 1945, after the end of World War II, the first issue of ELLE magazine was launched onto the world. With this, a dream had come true for ELLE founder Hélène Gordon Lazareff.

Some time before, Hélène had decided to follow her calling and focus entirely on what she loved: fashion. While living in Manhattan and writing for established fashion publications, her desire to start her own women’s fashion magazine grew increasingly. After returning to Paris in 1944 with her husband Pierre Lazareff, she saw that the time had come and she started working on ELLE magazine.

A strong foundation

Fashion, beauty, lifestyle and the empowerment of women form the foundation on which the ELLE brand is based.

From the start, ELLE has sought to inspire women to change the world and develop themselves and their own sense of fashion, beauty and lifestyle. In doing so, ELLE has always believed that women should enjoy the best of what life has to offer while doing something meaningful for others.

Women's suffrage, the right of access to education and work, opening their own bank accounts… women’s empowerment has already come a long way, partly thanks to our own mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers paving the way. Even today, the topic is still relevant and has finally been fully embraced by the public for some years now.

The equality of women is an important issue that is also reflected in the historical values of the ELLE brand. With and through ELLE, women share their vision of the world and life: ELLE not only wants to inspire women about fashion, beauty and lifestyle, but also encourage them to be themselves and to love who and how they are. This prospect makes the world shine brighter, full of positivity, self-esteem, freedom and self-empowerment.

In honour of the 75th anniversary, ELLE has come up with stirring mantras to strengthen women and girls.
